He is one of the pioneers of modern wind band music in The Netherlands and has a worldwide reputation as conductor, teacher and composer. From 1957 to 1964 he was director of the famous Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Marine. It was for the 1960 Delft Tattoo that he made this arrangement of the well-known British sailor's song Hornpipe, named after the typical celtic wooden wind instrument (originally made of cow horns in Wales). The Dutch dance 'horlepiep' refers to the same song and dance.
