The Dutch composer Kees Vlak (Amsterdam, 1938) has often been inspired by traditional folk music when composing for wind band. So, for example, he used themes from the Antilles, the Caribbean, France, Scotland, Slovakia and Russia, just to mention a few. But also, popular folk songs from different parts of The Netherlands have inspired him, and so he also wrote Amsterdam Pictures, Brabant Fantasy and Limburg Fantasy. The "Fryske Fantasie" (Friesian Fantasy), dedicated to Piebe Bakker the then director of the Bolsward music school, was awarded the composition prize at Hilvarenbeek in 1974. It was Piebe Bakker who made the first recording on a long-playing record with the National Dutch Youth Fanfare Band in 1976. Many Dutch will recognise the tunes, even if they ignore the original (rather difficult) Friesian titles.
