Composed by William P. Gorton. 20th Century,Contemporary,Patriotic. Full Performance. Duration 138. William P. Gorton #6118869. Published by William P. Gorton (A0.1071035).

"Freedom's Cost" is a beautiful lament on the price that has been paid by the few for so many, full of irony. With an 18th-century text by William Collins, this art song has been written with the style Schubert in mind (it was a Composition Modeling class project I completed when working on my doctorate). Haunting and lugubrious, it captures the essence of the ironic text.

Lyrics:
How sleep the brave who sink to rest, by all their country’s wishes blest! When Spring, with dewy fingers cold returns to deck their hallowed mould. She there shall dress a sweeter sod than Fancy’s feet have ever trod. By fairy hands their knell is rung; by forms unseen their dirge is sung! There Honor comes, a pilgrim grey, to bless the turf that wraps their clay; and Freedom shall awhile repair to dwell a weeping hermit there.
--William Collins (1721-1759)

William is also the artist/performer. This song appears on Gorton's album of art songs, "Brimfull," available through his website (see below). Score also available here on Sheet Music Plus.
