Composed by Kyle Rowan. Contemporary. Individual part. 8 pages. Penguinman Music #4595925. Published by Penguinman Music (A0.1023049).Flicker is a varied and playful work for solo bass clarinet composed for Calvin Falwell. The piece provides the larger clarinet with a degree of lightness perhaps more characteristic of its smaller brethren, with sections of agile flourishes, pointillistic staccato, and lyrical melodies juxtaposed against each other. The instrument's strength remains evident, however, particularly in the lower register. The playfulness emerges not only in the materials, but in the formal design, as the clarinetist flits from one character to another quickly and suddenly, rarely staying in one place for very long. The virtuosity that the work requires is therefore about more than technical skill; the performer must also navigate these changes of character and style with a balance and fluency that allows for cohesion between these disparate elements.
