Composed by Hjort Anders Olsson. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Folk,Instructional,March,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Individual part. 3 pages. Richard Hirsch #902352. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1313623).

I offer an arrangement of the Swedish folk fiddle melody Gärdebylåten attributed to Hjort Anders Olsson (1865-1952). The arrangement for solo acoustic guitar is meant to emulate the folky character of the fiddle/violin original. The melody is played regularly at fiddler gatherings called “spelmansstämma” (fiddlers’ rally, thereof the title) often in groups of fiddlers of all ages and abilities numbering anywhere from 10 to 100. It is quite a spectacle to witness!

The melody is one of the first Swedish folk tunes I heard upon immigrating to Sweden in 1975. It is a really catchy melody. The arrangement speeds up in the repeats to give the piece the flavour of the kind of friendly competitive spirit that often characterises these fiddler gatherings.

The guitar arrangement is within reach of advanced intermediate students of fingerstyle acoustic guitar and contains extensive left and right hand fingerings. The first few bars require full control of independent movement of the left hand fingers reminiscent of a Bach fugue. There are also hammer-ons and pull-offs which are typical elements of Swedish folk melodies.

The arrangement can also be played as a duett using the chords provided for an accompanying second guitar. The second guitar can improvise some pattern of alternating bases with alternating index and middle finger over the chords or do a boom-chuck base and brush down-and-up with the index finger. The chords provided are the most basic. There are more complicated chord progressions latent in the melody but teasing these out and incorporating them in the notation would, I feel, detract from the beautiful simplicity and drive of the folk melody.
