The Fantasy-Etudes for Bassoon and Percussion were composed in 1983. The five pieces call for a variety of timbres-no two of them are scored for the same combination of instruments, and two of the movements require two percussionists. The full batterie consists of vibraphone, bongos, a small tom-tom, bells (glockenspiel), chimes, and claves. The composer has referred to these Fantasy-Etudes as studies in styles, the music ranging from the freedom of the Rhapsody and the strict metrical control of the Caprice to the simple lyricism of the Reminiscence. Judith LeClair, Principal Bassoon of the New York Philharmonic, recorded the Fantasy-Etudes on her compact disc recital in the New York Legends series produced by Cala Records (CACD 0515).
This publication of the Fantasy-Etudes includes two full performance scores and copies of the extra pages required for the second percussionist.
