Composed by H Balfour Gardiner. Arranged by Lisa Ochoco. 20th Century. 28 pages. Lisa L Ochoco #5852353. Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.559924).

Henry Balfour Gardiner was a British composer and teacher. He composed a variety of music, but many of his works have unfortunately been lost.

Evening Hymn is Gardiner's most popular piece. Written in 1908 for choir and organ, this piece is still sung regularly in churches today. This arrangement is for clarinet choir. The contrabass has a somewhat boring part, as the part mostly consists of playing drone notes, which are played on the pipe organ's pedalboard. It is, however, quite an important part of this piece. There are 2 part divisis in all 4 the upper Bb parts.

The lyrics are taken from "Te lucis ante terminum" or in English, "To Thee before the close of day".

To Thee before the close of day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That, with Thy wonted favour, Thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;
Withhold from us our ghostly foe,
That spot of sin we may not know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son,
Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.

Amen.
