Etude 2.5 uses fourths, all over the place! Actually, four fourths stack up a bit too high for the average hand to play with rapidity and accuracy, so I have stacked up the fourths in two segments, which makes for 2 fourths a whole-step apart, an artifact rather than an intended consequence of this interval's usage. A melody tone is at the top and bottom of each quartal structure, making a tune that flows while the fourths go rolling by. Wide dynamic contrasts here as well. Clusters move in not-quite-mirrored contrary motion, and the symmetry in the melodic sections is staggered rather than direct, so as to make for a bit of a phase effect. Approx. running time is 4 mins 20 secs. The piece can be pedaled or played dry, some pedaling indicated specifically. MBB.
