The first string quartet was commissioned by the A*DEvantgarde and premiered by the Leopolder Quartet at the festival opening in June 1991 in the concert hall of the Munich City Museum.
!993, on Wolfgang Rihm's recommendation, a revision was made with a new version of the beginnings of the first and second movements. The premiere of the revised version took place on November 18, 1995, at a concert of the Studio for New Music by the Artus Quartet. The concert recording served as the basis for a production by Bayerischer Rundfunk.
