Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by Shawn Boucké. This edition: pdf. 19th Century, Classical, Romantic Period. 5 pages. Shawn Boucke #1158290. Published by Shawn Boucke (A0.1586856).

This arrangement of Erlkönig (Erlking) for unaccompanied violin is designed for intermediate to advancing students. It maintains the intensity of the original while being approachable for solo performance. The arrangement features frequent double stops, requiring solid intonation and bow control, along with passages in the higher register that demand secure shifting. While technically challenging, the piece is structured to be accessible to those looking to develop their skills in multi-voice playing and expressive phrasing.

Originally composed for voice and piano, the piece dramatically portrays four distinct characters—the narrator, a desperate father, his rightened child, and the sinister Erlking. Translating this complexity into a single instrumental voice required careful consideration of phrasing, articulation, and register.

To maintain a clean and uncluttered score, I have resisted marking where each character begins and ends. Instead, the interpretation is left to the performer, allowing for personal expression in shaping the narrative. However, the lyrical writing primarily highlights the child’s pleading lines and the seductive calls of the Erlking, while the relentless motion of the accompaniment suggests the galloping horse and the father’s urgency.

I hope this arrangement allows violinists to explore the dramatic depth of this masterpiece in a new and compelling way.
