Program Note.
Ellygie was written in memory of my neighbour in Delft, where I lived for 3 years in the early 2000s. Elly was a woman who combined great strength with grace, warmth and tenderness. She showed a deep and unswerving love for those dear to her, indeed at great cost to herself. Elly sang in a local choir; in addition, she was a rare artistic talent who never complained that her opportunities for self expression were constrained by personal circumstances. Rather, she grasped whatever chances came her way with gusto.
The main melody is an adaptation, in the minor, of "Au Clair de la Lune". The middle section (marked 'giocoso') has a piano part based on a musical rendering of her daughters' names. One can hear the two little girls laughing and playing while their calm mother Elly (violin) reigns.
Elly died at the age of 65 in February 2013.
