An elegy is a mournful song, and many composers have found the viola's tone perfect to express sadness or grief in pieces titled, "Elegy." This short elegy is designed to introduce the student to the genre, producing a beautiful tone while also playing entirely in the third position if desired. Use open strings or the piano accompaniment to check intonation, especially if playing in a minor key is a new experience, Minor keys use the pitches of their relative major, but the focus is on a different home pitch (tonic). This piece is in c minor, with the same three flatted pitches as its relative major key of E-flat: Major - B-flat, E-flat, A-flat.
