I always compose with a scene in mind, with a specific mood to capture. The story behind Departure is that of a hero, who suddenly has to leave their home in pursuit of some quest that has been thrust upon them. They may not have even been able to say goodbye. The hero looks back at their home one last time, as the sun goes down.
Departure is written in the key of C, there are no accidentals, and the range is D2 to C6. The piece as written is suitable for the intermediate player, but the accompaniment could be simplified to make it easier.
