Released in Australia in August 1979, the song was the second single from the band’s sixth album, First Under the Wire.
It was released in the United States in 1979 where it peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1980. In May 2001 "Cool Change" was selected by the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time.
The song also awarded a special citation of achievement by Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) for over two million radio broadcasts in the United States.
