Composed by Johann Baptist Vanhal. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Classical. Score and parts. 48 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #699644. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.1095659).
The Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739-1813) rose from humble beginnings to become a respected musical instructor to the nobility in Vienna, eventually managing to make a living as an independent composer and musician, one of the first to do so in that city. When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart relocated to Vienna in 1782 Vanhal made his acquaintance and played with him in a string quartet. The younger composer admired Vanhal’s symphonies. His Concerto in F major has been recorded several times on the organ. However, there is no reason that it cannot also be played on the modern piano. It possesses considerable musical interest, and the clarity of its technical demands fills a useful pedagogical niche for the advancing student preparing to tackle the major works of the Classical concerto repertory by Haydn and Mozart. I hope that making this charming work available in this version for two pianos will introduce it to a wider audience of performers, students and teachers. Kiyoshi Tamagawa, August 2022.
