The Concertino* was written between 17th December 1966 and 10th January 1967 in Belmont, near Lausanne, a few months before the composer's death. It is in three movements: Capriccio (5'30"), Recitativo (5') and Perpetuum mobile (4'10").
It was first performed in the studios of Radio Lugano on 8th May 1967 by the trumpeter Helmut Hunger, to whom it is dedicated, and the Orchestra of Radio Lugano, conducted by the composer. The orchestration is as follows: 1 piccolo, 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon; 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone; timpani, triangle, side drum, xylophone, tam-tam, 1 suspended cymbal; strings.
This work has been chosen as the set piece for the 43rd Geneva International Competition for Musical Performance 1987.
