2015 Piano Contest The tritonic scale has been in use since the days of Chopin, who used it in several of his etudes. Beethoven also used it in his final sonata Arietta movement. It consists of the root, a 4th up, and the 5th from the root as well, making it "feel" like a note, the next note up a 4th, followed by another whole-step up, and then the root again. It is such a versatile structure because not only can it stand on its own, but has lots of combinatorial possibilities with other tritonic scales, simultaneously. This piece explores some of those combinations. It also adds an element of contrary motion, in that, as the right-hand scale rises, the left-hand scale descends, in terms of the starting pitches. This makes for the colour shifts that are the piece's namesake and hallmark. So, after a brief octave introduction, the tritonics take off, and show their colours in combination. It is the only structure present in the piece. Thus the dynamics and accents give the piece additional contrasts in mood and flavor. An Intermediate piece, since the one structure can be easily mastered. Pedaling throughout, except for staccato passages. Can work at various tempi. MP3 MIDI audio. MBB.
