The melody and English text for the refrain of this piece come from the chant, Puer natus is Bethlehem and from Psalm 96: "A child is born in Bethlehem, alleluia: With a new song we sing to Him, alleluia, alleluia." Along with a supportive and fluid organ accompaniment, Dr. Greene has added an optional descant on this refrain for sopranos and tenors. The setting for the verses (taken from Isaiah 9) maintains the modal flavor of the piece with a simple original psalm tone. Christmas Litany would make easy, effective music for any processional moment (Entrance, Offertory, Communion) during all of Christmastide, from the Vigil through the Baptism of the Lord.
