An ancient Christian Prayer in Koine Greek, the language of the New Testament, "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison" which means "Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy," comes from Jesus’ parable about the self-righteous religious leader and the humble tax-collector. In the parable, Jesus contrasts the way these two offer their prayers. The religious leader prays by thanking God that he is such a righteous man which, of course, isn’t really true, but when the tax-collector prays to God, he only says, "Kyrie eleison". The Kyrie prayer has been part of Christian Liturgy since at least the 2nd century, and possibly dates to the apostolic era.
Celtic Kyrie (lyrics)
[Refrain]
Kyrie eleison, Christe Eleison, Kyrie eleison, eleison
Hear Your broken people, Hear our feeble prayer
Keep us from all evil, O Lord, have mercy
You came calling sinners, Healing our afflictions
Grant us your salvation, O Christ, have mercy
God Almighty, Have mercy, Forgive our trespasses
Bring us life, Your life everlasting
Amen
