Carmina Burana, first performed in 1937, is based on an important collection of thirteenth-century poems found in the monastery of Benediktbeuren. Carl Orff made selections from this collection and in robust and delicate musical colors painted a manifold picture of life. “Everything I have written up to now, and which you have unfortunately printed, you can shred into pulp. My collected works begin with 'Carmina Burana'.” Carl Orff wrote to his publisher after the premiere. And so it was that his work caused a sensation in the whole world and continues to delight people of all cultures. The 'Carmina Burana' is written for solo singers, chorus and orchestra.

print a little small
I am not an expert or professional, just a music enthusiast. I ordered this and other titles to study orchestration of big works from the late 1800s and early 1900s. This is a paperback study score. The print size if pretty small, and the print quality isn't as good as in some other texts; there are small imperfections/gaps in the print on the ledger lines. I'm not sure this will hinder those with lots of music experience. I have trouble with it, especially the print size in some cases, trying to determine if the note is on, or between, the lines (even with my strongest eyeglasses). A more experienced musician might find this no problem though, intuiting the correct notes. The score looks very detailed with all instrumentation, lyrics, and a historical preface. It is small and convenient to carry, probably about 8.5x11.I look forward to learning from it, particularly the solo soprano parts. I have an audio recording sung by Sylvia McNair that I find particularly moving.
