Each of the five movements is inspired by one of the five flags which has flown over the city of Pensacola, where the university is located. The flag of the Confederacy inspired the fourth movement which is a set of variations on the state song of Florida, Old Folks at Home , also known as Swannee River (written by Stephen Foster and first published in 1851).
