To compose, I responded to this message from the commissioning group: "There is a word that we always cherish: Spirit of brass. There are various forms of spirit, but we think that ours is a burning passion within. Magma or flame would represent that. Magma quietly simmers in the middle of the earth. Once it burns, it doesn't go out and grows bigger and bigger. Just as combining a fire with another makes a blaze, we too, create a large blaze, stacking our small fires together. This is who we are: Ensemble FANFARE. We would be grateful if you could express these three things: explosive energy (soul), blazing flame, and warm light (fire)." The work has a fierce opening, a middle part with unstable irregular time, and a gentle ending, titled "Blazing Brass". (Chang Su KOH).
