BIG RIFF is a new work by John Frith for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. It was written as the opening "Anthem" for "Trombonanza 2017", which is a festival takes place annually in the town of Santa Fe, Argentina.
Mr. Frith was commissioned to compose this work to open the Festival.
The music is about 5 minutes in length and features strong Latin rhythms throughout. The work builds and builds as it adds layers of complexities including a jazz solo for one of the players.
The all the middle parts are playable by intermediate performers. Part 1 can be performed on alto or tenor and goes up to high "f's". Part 8 is quite low.
The work ends in a big climax after building up throughout. Very fun work to perform with a massed group.
