Michael John Norris was born in 1934. He studied bassoon, composition, and theory at Trinity College of Music and subsequently the Royal Academy of Music in London. He joined the Band of the Coldstream Guards in 1954, one of the best-known bands in the British Army dating from 1785. In 1962 he took up residence in Glasgow, Scotland, joining the Scottish Variety Orchestra (subsequently the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra) until 1966. In that year he was appointed contrabassoonist with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, playing principal bassoon from 1970–1986. When he retired from playing Norris enrolled at the University of Glasgow as a mature student, graduating in 1990 with a B.Mus. He was then invited to teach at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now the Royal Scottish Conservatoire. Pursuing his interest in composing, Norris founded Sirron Publications to promote his works. These include light music, concertos for various instruments, wind band and brass band music, together with a wide variety of chamber music and vocal music. Bass Motives began life as a bassoon trio that he arranged for double basses in 1982. It was published by Yorke Edition in 1987 following extensive revision. He died on 10 June 2016.
