Eduard Strauss, the third son of Johann Strauss the Elder, was born on March 15, 1835, in Vienna. Originally, Eduard looked for employment in the diplomatic service, but he also studied music theory. He became a harpist in the Strauss orchestra in 1855. In 1862, he joined his two famous brothers Johann Jr. and Josef as a conductor of the family orchestra. Like that of his two brothers, his musical output was prolific: he wrote over 320 separate dances and marches. Apart from the exuberant Bahn Frei (Track Clear), which he wrote in 1869, and a handful of other fast polkas (he excelled in this particular dance form), his music is not as well known as that of his brothers.
Eduard Strauss, de jongste zoon van Johann Strauss senior, werkte aanvankelijk in de diplomatie, maar studeerde ook muziektheorie. Hij werd harpist in het Strauss-orkest in 1855. Vanaf 1862 wijdde hij zich net als zijn twee beroemdebroers Johann junior en Josef aan het dirigentschap van het familieorkest. Eduard Strauss was zeer productief als componist: hij schreef meer dan 320 dansen en marsen. Zijn muziek is niet zo bekend als die van zijn broers, metuitzondering van een handjevol andere snelle polka’s (hij blonk uit in deze dansvorm) en het uitbundige werk Bahn Frei, dat hij schreef in 1869.
Eduard Strauss (1835-1916) war der dritte Sohn von Johann Strauss senior. Musikalisch war er, wie seine beiden Brüder Johann junior und Josef, sehr produktiv: Er schrieb über 320 einzelne Tänze und Märsche, wobei er sich als Meister der Polka erwies. Dennoch ist seine Musik heute nicht mehr so bekannt wie die seiner Brüder.
