Composed by Christopher Tin. Arranged by Rebecca Bogardus. A Cappella. Score and parts. 38 pages. Lillwy Publishing #5215937. Published by Lillwy Publishing (A0.877936).

The Grammy-award winning Baba Yetu has its roots in the gaming world; it was composed by Christopher Tin as the theme music for the computer game Civilization IV. Tin drew his inspiration from a capella performances of traditional African music he heard in his university days, but he also paired his driving, rhythmic music with lyrics from an unlikely source: the words are essentially a Swahili translation of the Lord's Prayer. The exultant nature of the prayer is encapsulated in Tin's setting, with figure building on figure and soaring lines that emerge gloriously from the rhythmic and melodic foundation.

This arrangement may be played in a number of instrumental configurations as long as there are at least eight players in the group, as follows:

-As written: Full flute choir with piccolo, 4 C flutes, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes.

-If no contrabass is available, use the "Alternate Bass Flute" part, which may be played on a bass if available or a C flute if no bass is present. If only one bass flute is available, it should play the "alternate bass flute" part while a C flute plays the bass flute part.

-If you only have C flutes and a piccolo available, C flutes may play the alto and bass flute parts; in this case the "Alternate Flute 5" part replaces the alto flute part.

-All of the configurations require either a hand drum and a resonant floor in the performing venue (for foot stomps) or a percussionist and whichever drums will achieve the desired effect. The percussion part is written for congas and bass drum, but there are many options that would work. If using the "Optional Percussion" part, all hand percussion and foot stomp notation in the flute parts should be ignored.

-The "Beginning Flute" part is entirely optional and is designed to allow beginning flute students to join the flute choir at an early stage. It is correlated with private method books, not band method books.
