Het fraaie koraalthema Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir is terug te voeren op Martin Luther en is gebaseerd op de tekst van psalm 130. Bekend werd het koraal pas vooral door de gelijknamige koraalcantate. Johann Sebastian Bachschreef deze precies tweehonderd jaar later, in het jaar 1724.
