Atropos is one of the three goddesses of fate. Atropos cuts the thread of life of a person whenever their time has come. She works alongside Clotho, who spins the thread, and Lachesis who determines the length of the thread. Although the title suggests that the composition Atropos is sinister or sad in character, the contrary is true. The work has a positive nature. Although one can not change ones's destiny, one should enjoy life to the fullest.The composition is film-like and presents challenges in sound, balance and rhythm. The work opens in a quiet mood in which the themes are presented. After this a rhythmical passage follows in which these themes areused and further developed. Finally all the elements are combined and we are led to a sparkling apotheosis that is demanding in its melodic phrasing and requires stamina from the musicians.

Atropos, Clotho en Lechesis. Samen bepalen deze schikgodinnen het lot van de mens. Wanneer het iemands tijd is, knipt Atropos de levensdraad door. Clotho is het die de draad ooit spon en Lachesis bepaalt de lengte. Ondanks dit watsombere gegeven, is de compositie Atropos positief van karakter. De componist geeft daarmee aan dat je van het leven kunt genieten, ook al ben je met je lot verbonden. Het filmische karakter biedt het gehele orkest uitdagingop het gebied van klankvorming en ritme. Atropos besluit in een spetterende finale. Dit is de uitdaging die u zoekt voor uw orkest!

Atropos ist eine der drei Schicksalsgottinnen in der griechischen Mythologie. Ihre Aufgabe ist, den Lebensfaden zu durchschneiden, wenn die Zeit eines Menschen gekommen ist. Sie wirkt zusammen mit ihren Schwestern Klotho, die den Faden spinnt, und Lachesis, die dessen Lange bestimmt. Ihr Name als Titel deutet eigentlich auf eine düstere oder traurige Komposition hin, doch das Gegenteil ist der Fall: Das Werk hat einen sehr positiven Charakter. Auch wenn man sein Schicksal nicht andern kann, sollte man doch das Leben in vollen Zügen geniessen.Die Komposition Atropos ist in einem filmmusikalischen Stil geschrieben und halt Herausforderungen in Klang, Balance undRhythmik bereit. Sie beginnt in einer ruhigen Stimmung, in welcher die Themen vorgestellt werden. Darauf folgt ein ruhiger Abschnitt, in dem diese Themen verwendet und weiter entwickelt werden. Schliesslich werden alle Elemente miteinander kombiniert und führen zu einer schillernden Apotheose, die eine anspruchsvolle melodische Phrasierung enthalt und den Musikern Ausdauer abverlangt.

Atropos est une des trois deesses de la destinee - elle coupe le fil de la vie d'une personne lorsque son heure est venue. Elle oeuvre aux cotes de Clotho, qui fabrique le fil, et de Lachesis, qui en determine la longueur. Le titre de cette composition suggere un climat sombre voire sinistre, toutefois, il n'en est rien : Atropos est de nature positive. Bien que nul ne puisse alterer sa propre destinee, il faut profiter au maximum de la vie.Semblable a un film, cette composition presente des complexites en termes de timbre, de balance et de rythme. Elle s'ouvre dans une ambiance calme pour presenter les themes. S'ensuit un passage rythmique ou ces themes sont repetes etdeveloppes. Enfin, tous les elements se combinent pour nous mener vers une brillante apotheose dont le phrase melodique, tres exigeant, demande une certaine maitrise de la part des musiciens.
