By bringing the key down a fifth, the showier, more technically demanding aspects of the piece are eliminated, thus allowing access to the intermediate level player, while still remaining an enjoyable selection for professional players. In addition, I feel the lower key enables both the listener and the performer to absorb the deeply resonant and meditative qualities of the cello.
