Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. Philip Sparke had produced a CD recording with Sheona as soloist and had her wonderful sound in his ears while writing this piece. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves merely as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The piano accompaniment takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. The piano then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close.

Aria is geschreven in opdracht van en voor de buitengewone althoorniste Sheona White. Componist Philip Sparke heeft een cd-opname geproduceerd met Sheona als soliste, en tijdens het schrijven van dit werk hij had steeds haar prachtige geluid in gedachten. Het werk opent met een begeleid recitatief, dat uitmondt in een modulatie waarmee de hoofdmelodie wordt aangekondigd, die vervolgens weer dient als inleiding tot een ander melodisch idee, dat als calmato is gemarkeerd. De pianobegeleiding pakt dit thema op en neemt de hoofdrol over met een gepassioneerde herhaling van het hoofdthema, dat door de solist wordt voltooid. Daarna speelt de piano het calmato-thema in samenspel met de solist, die een tegenmelodie ten gehore brengt. Met een herneming van het openingsrecitatief wordt het werk in vredige sfeer afgesloten.

Aria entstand im Auftrag von Sheona White, einer bemerkenswerten Tenorhornspielerin, für die das Stück auch geschrieben wurde. Philip Sparke hatte bereits eine CD mit Sheona als Solistin aufgenommen und komponierte dieses Stück mit dem wundervollen Klang ihres Spiels im Ohr. Das Werk beginnt mit einem begleiteten Rezitativ, welches zu einem Tonartwechsel bei der Präsentation der Hauptmelodie führt. Diese wiederum dient hauptsächlich zur Einführung einer weiteren melodischen Idee, die mit Calmato bezeichnet wird. Die Klavierbegleitung nimmt dieses Thema auf. Dann tritt sie mit einer leidenschaftlichen Wiederholung des Hauptthemas, welche durch den Solisten ergänzt wird, in den Vordergrund. Daraufhin spielt das Klavier das Calmato-Thema, dem der Solist eine Gegenmelodie entgegensetzt. Dies führt zur Rückkehr des Rezitativs der Eröffnung, welches das Werk zu einem friedlichen Ende leitet.

Commande de la remarquable joueuse de saxhorn alto Sheona White, Aria a été écrite spécifiquement pour elle. Philips Sparke avait produit l’enregistrement d’un CD dont Sheona était la soliste et, en écrivant cette pièce, il « entendait » encore ses merveilleuses sonorités. L’oeuvre débute avec un récitatif accompagné qui mène un changement de tonalité où est exposée la mélodie principale. Celle-ci, son tour, sert simplement d’introduction une autre mélodie, indiquée calmato. L’accompagnement au piano reprend ce thème puis devient le centre d’attention avec une reprise passionnée du thème principal, qui est complété par la soliste. Le piano joue ensuite le thème calmato tandis que la soliste interprète une contre-mélodie. Ce passage mène un retour du récitatif du début qui conduit l’oeuvre une conclusion paisible.
