An elegant and moving work, when performed at a concert to celebrate Russian author Leo Tolstoy, it was noted by Tchaikovsky that Tolstoy wept at the end of the movement. In addition to the original string quartet version, Andante Cantabile is often performed as a stand alone string orchestra work or one for solo cello and string orchestra.
