By Traditional. By John Newton, William Walker. Arranged by John Skillman. Classical,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Spiritual,Traditional. 12 pages. John Curtis Music #353657. Published by John Curtis Music (A0.745736).

English clergyman John Newton wrote the words to "Amazing Grace" in 1772, but it wasn't until 1835 that composer William Walker set it to an old English tune called "New Britain." That particular marriage of words and melody struck at something fundamental in the American psyche, and has since remained immensely popular. This arrangement uses the simple pentatonic melody of "New Britain" as positive space, then proceeds through a series of modulations and transitional harmonies to explore all the negative space. #woodwindquintet #chambermusic #hymns #traditional #spiritual.
