The work was commissioned by clarinetist Bruce Belton, who premiered the work at the Golden Gate Players Chamber Music Festival in 2017. The title of the piece refers to situations in which a person undergoes great trauma or tragedy, forcing them to re-evaluate life, and in a sense, move forward with All That Remains. What remains in these circumstances is often the most important things, while unimportant things are left behind.
