Composed by Maurice Ravel. Arranged by Richard Simm. 20th Century. Score. 19 pages. Richard Simm #6718249. Published by Richard Simm (A0.800638).A pianist once sought Ravel's advice on how to play the notoriously tricky repeated notes in sections of this very difficult work, which was originally composed for solo piano. Ravel was not particularly helpful, saying only, "I don't care how you play it; just don't slow down!" However it is as if the composer recognized that there was something unreasonable about his pianistic demands, and he later orchestrated it in his masterful fashion, along with another tricky piece from the same set ("Miroirs"). The colourful and exciting results were the inspiration for Richard Simm's arrangements of both of them for two pianos, which of course makes it considerably easier to maintain the rhythmic drive which Ravel clearly had in mind.
