Bereits zwei Monate nach der Uraufführung von Schillers Drama Die Jungfrau von Orléans erschien Zumsteegs Vertonung der ersten Strophe von Johannas Abschiedsmonolog für Singstimme und Klavier. Wenige Wochen später verstarb der Komponist, ohne die Vertonung der weiteren Strophen abschließen zu können. Bald darauf wurde auch die von Leopold C. Reinicke verfasste Gitarrenfassung veröffentlicht (1802).
