Published by Colne Edition / BullardMusic (A0.1140766).'A Child is Born' was written by the US trumpeter, composer and bandleader Thad Jones (1923-86) as an instrumental number, and its beautiful melody later inspired the songwriter Alec Wilder (1907-80) to add the lyrics. Originally the melody was played straight, as written here, but it is often played or sung with a wider variety of rhythms and phrasing. We have also added an optional 'instrumental' section which decorates the melody and can be played more freely. Throughout the piece, aim to play with a sense of flow, and with expressive detail and tone.
