I. Intermezzo - Composed in 1861, this piece bears the additional title Intermezzo in modo dassico . Musorgsky orchestrated an extended version of this piece in 1867. The significance of the addendum 'in modo classico' is unclear since the piece evokes rather folkloristic associations. II. Une Plaisanterie - There are two versions of this piece Children's Prank , of 26 September 1859 and of 28 May 1860. The musical diction is somewhat reminiscent of Musorgsky's song cycle Nursery. III. En Crimee. Hoursouff - This piece was written in the years 1879/80 and is also found under the title Impressions de Voyage en Crimee or On Crimea's Southern Shore . The monophonic beginning reminds one of the gnome in the Pictures al an Exhibition. However, the salon-like middle section is not up to the level of the opening. IV. Meditation. Feuillct d'album - Album Leaf was composed in 1880 and gives the impression of a "frozen" improvisation. Unfortunately, as the piece progresses, it does not meet up to the expectations it aroused. The influence of Chopin is unmistakable. V. Unc Larme - A Tear was written in 1880 and is stylistically related to Chopin's Nocturnes. VI. La Couturicre. Scherzino - The Seamstress is a virtuoso work and can be considered as a kind of show piece. VII. En Crimee. Capriccio - This belongs to piece No. 3 and was also composed in 1879/80. The rhythm of the middle part recalls that of Bolero. Did Ravel perhaps know this piece? VIII. Au Village - In the Village was composed in 1880. Its modal harmony bears Russian-orthodox traits. The second part 'Alla zingara', despite its folk-like character, unfortunately cannot maintain the tension of the first part.
