Dixit Maria was written for Portishead Summer Singers in 2006 to be premiered in a service of Nine Lessons and Carols.

The Latin text translates as:

Mary said to the Angel: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me, according to your word.

The work is written in four parts, but splits into eight for a short section. It is based around the key of F# major, but modulates to other keys, some of which are unexpected. There are two big climaxes, and the music dies away at the end as Mary understands the meaning of the angel's words. Dixit Maria takes inspiration from the intricate and rich textures of the Renaissance era, while infusing it with the harmonic depth and complexity of more contemporary music.
