He served as church organist at St. Clement’s and St. James, Chicago, Illinois, in the 1880’s and 1890’s. Around 1895, he founded the School of Music at Northwestern University. He also helped found the American Guild of Organists and the North Shore Festival in Chicago. He is remembered largely for this one short piece of choral music.
