Night on board. A breeze is starting to blow, causing a light swell. A sail is flapping. At the bowsprit a dwarfish figure appears. With an awful laughter, the tiny, clenched face lit by greenish St. Elmo's fire, it begins to sing a dreadful sea shanty. The wind turns into a gale. The Klabautermann is a bad omen, indeed. Horrified by the sight, the sailors say a prayer. Loudly laughing out, the gnome disappears. The sea finally calms down.
