La Cenerentola (Cinderella) is based on the fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault. Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) composed La Cenerentola at age 25 following the success of his opera The Barber of Seville. Rossini's Cinderella follows the traditional fairy tale with a few variations: the wicked stepmother is replaced with a stepfather, Don Magnifico, the Fairy Godmother is replaced with a philosopher and tutor to the prince, Alidoro, and Cinderella is identified by a bracelet instead of a glass slipper. La Cenerentola premiered on January 25, 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome and today is considered a staple of the standard repertoire. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).2.2.2 : 2.2.1.0: Timp: Perc(1): Str(4.4.3.3.3 in set): Vocal Soli (7 roles, SSATBBB) Chorus.
