Sweney was a 19th Century hymnist from Pennsylvania. E.E. Hewitt was a teacher and poet, also 19th Century from Pennsylvania. The hymn addressed the internal transformation brought on by Jesus Christ. Sections A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the chorus. A modulation to a new key occurs with the aid of an Italian augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then added.
