An emotional, evocative melody plays on solo cello under a gentle string accompaniment. Oboe and Bass Clarinet join in with a new theme that interweaves with the cello and later the harp. A swirling motif and sustained strings add more sophisticated textures to the music. There is a brief ritardando with a descending harp motif followed by a new theme played with soulful expression on the violins and violas. The music builds rhythmically and with an accelerando to a sudden stabbing forte chord. The music ends with a gentle coda…a plaintiff descending motive on the oboe over fading tremolo strings.
