Taylor Swift's plaintive and poignant ballad recalls the folk-music of the Appalachian mountains, where much of the greatest folksongs of the British Isles, going back centuries, were preserved in their purest and most beautiful forms, and subsequently collected and published by Cecil Sharpe and Maud Karpeles (This little volume contains some very well-known songs, such as Bob Dylan's "Masters of War", based on the English folksong, "Nottamun Town" - AKA, "Nottingham Fair"). For the first seventeen bars ('measures') she is accompanied by a single strummed guitar, creating an atmosphere of lonesome beauty from the first plaintive notes. At bar 18, synthesised strings enter - very softly - and the whole comes to rest on a quiet, sustained E-minor chord, before bursting out again into a short, but beautifully-crafted instrumental solo, with bluegrass banjo, mandolin and bass added to the mix. After a climactic second verse, the song ends quietly and reflectively, the final notes resonating in the still air of the North Carolina marshlands ...
