Composed by Edwin Franco Goldman. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. 20th Century,Recital,Old-time,Americana. Score,Set of Parts,Solo Part. 17 pages. Published by Aaron Hettinga (S0.1195239).

Originally published in 1915, Edwin Franko Goldman’s “Jupiter” solo is a fantastic vehicle to showcase a young Trombone/Baritone player. The level of difficulty being rather modest, this solo remains well accessible to a broad range of skill levels while retaining the flavor and showmanship of the early 20th Century’s band pieces.

Presented here for brass quintet, the Trombone/Baritone part contains the whole of the solo (only as high as a third ledger line“G” above the staff) while the remaining 4 parts serve as the accompaniment, arranged to make the best use of figures from the original band parts. This allows for a soloist to be able to present this piece with more than just the piano accompaniment or for an existing brass quintet to add a solo feature to their library.

Performance option: to obtain a more rounded “period” sound, it is recommended to use conical brass instruments throughout the ensemble where the trumpet parts are played on cornets. Also, younger players can eliminate the trill in the cadenza, taking everything after the last middle “C” down an octave.

This exciting solo feature will make a fine addition to a brass quintet program!
