Legend of a Giant is a composition for solo alto saxophone and Wind Band composed by the Belgian composer Kevin Houben. The composer dedicated this challenging saxophone concerto to the Spanish saxophone virtuoso Mariano Garcia.The work had its première in May 2021 in the Lemmensinstitute with the Wind Band of the LUCA School of Arts in Leuven (Belgium) conducted by Ivan Meylemans.Mariano Garcia is a full time professor saxophone at the LUCA School ofArts, the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon in Zaragoza (Spain) and the Wiener Akademie Musik (Austria).As in any classical concerto the saxophone soloist ‘competes’ with the orchestra: first alternately, in dialogue witheachother, afterwards fraternally together. Moreover the orchestra is regarded as an equal partner, therefore also for the musicians of the orchestra this cinematic score presents a tough challenge.Legend of a giant immerses thelistener in the world of the saxophone and challenges the soloist in the field of lyricism and timbre, but also on a technical level. In this way various aspects and modern playing styles such as bisbigliandos, double staccato,frullatos, glissandos, harmonics of overtones,… pass in review. In a word: a tough ‘challenge’ for any saxophone virtuoso! (!) A simplified version of the saxophone solo part also exists.

Legend of a Giant is een compositie voor solo altsaxofoon en harmonieorkest van de Belgische componist Kevin Houben. De componist droeg dit uitdagende saxofoonconcerto op aan de Spaanse saxofoonvirtuoos Mariano Garc a. Het werkging in première in mei 2021 in het Lemmensinstituut met het harmonieorkest van LUCA School of Arts in Leuven (België) onder leiding van Ivan Meylemans. Mariano Garc a is voltijds professor saxofoon aan LUCA School of Arts, hetConservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón in Zaragoza (Spain) en de Wiener Akademie Musik (Oostenrijk). Zoals in elk klassiek concerto gaat de saxofoonsolist ‘de strijd’ aan met het orkest. Eerst om beurt, in dialoog met elkaar,daarna broederlijk samen. Het orkest wordt bovendien als een gelijkwaardige partner beschouwd, dus ook voor de orkestmuzikanten vormt deze filmische score een pittige uitdaging. Legend of a Giant dompelt de luisteraar onder in dewereld van de saxofoon en daagt de solist uit op het gebied van lyriek en klankkleur, maar ook op het technische vlak. Zo passeren verschillende aspecten en moderne speelstijlen als bisbigliando’s, dubbele staccato’s, frullato’s,glissando’s, harmonics of overtones, ... de revue. Kortom: een grote “challenge” voor élke saxofoonvirtuoos! (!) Er bestaat ook een vereenvoudigde versie van de saxofoonsolo.

Legend of a Giant ist eine Komposition für solo Altsaxophon und Harmonie-Orchester des belgischen Komponisten Kevin Houben. Der Komponist hat dieses herausfordernde Saxophon-concerto dem spanischen Saxophonvirtuosen Mariano Garciegewidmet. Das stück wurde im Mai 2021 im Lemmensinstitut uraufgeführt vom Harmonie-Orchester des Luca School of Arts in Löwen (Belgien) mit Dirigenten Ivan Meylemans. Mariano Garc a ist vollzeit Professor Saxophon an denSchulen LUCA School of Arts, Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón in Zaragoza (Spanien) und die Wiener Akademie Musik (Österreich). Wie in jedem klassischen Concerto ‘streitet’ sich der Saxophonsolist mit dem Orchester.Zuerst abwechselnd, miteinander dialogierend, dann brüderlich zusammen. Das Orchester wird überdies als gleichwertiger Partner betrachtet. Also auch für die Musiker des Orchesters bildet dieses filmische Partitur eine harteHerausforderung. Mit Legend of a Giant taucht der Zuhörer in die Welt des Saxophons unter. Der Solist wird nicht nur technisch herausgefordert, sondern auch auf der Ebenen der Lyrik und Klangfarbe. So gibt es verschiedene Aspekteund moderne Spielstile wie Bisbigliandos, doppelte Staccatos, Frullatos, Glissandos, Harmonics oder Overtones. Kurzum: ein großes “Challenge” für jeden Saxophonvirtuosen! (!) Es gbit auch eine vereinfachte Version desSaxophonsolos.

Legend of a Giant est un solo pour saxophone alto et orchestre d'harmonie écrit par le compositeur belge Kevin Houben. Ce concerto, exigeant techniquement, a été dédié saxophoniste virtuose espagnol Mariano Garcia. L'œuvre a étécréée en mai 2021 au Lemmensinstitute avec l'orchestre d'harmonie de la LUCA School of Arts de Louvain (Belgique) sous la direction d'Ivan Meylemans. Mariano Garcia est professeur de saxophone plein temps la LUCA School ofArts, au Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon Saragosse (Espagne) et la Wiener Akademie Musik (Autriche). Comme dans tout concerto classique, le saxophoniste « rivalisera » avec l'orchestre : le dialogue initial entre lesoliste et l’ensemble, les questions-réponses se développeront en un tutti fraternel.
