Over 5000 years ago the Sumerians referred to it as a scorpion. Ptolemy, in the second century recorded it, and also named the bright red supergiant star Antares, the heart of the scorpion. The Chinese knew this as the fire star, the dragon’s heart. In ancient Egyptian lore, it was associated with the goddess Serket, who protected people from venomous stings. In Greek myth Orion is stung to death by the scorpion, which is why his constellation sets as Scorpius rises.
