There are many anecdotes about the String Quartet op. 131: Beethoven described it as his best work; This string quartet was most important to him - looking back on the works of his last creative period. The composer dealt with a lot in it: health problems, social isolation due to his increasing deafness, and the suicide attempt of his nephew Karl. It is also said that Franz Schubert wished to hear this work again on his deathbed. If the anecdotes are perhaps not all true, they reveal what generations of musicians thought they recognized in this string quartet: Beethoven's most personal musical language and a vulnerable message from the last time before his death.
