About the 12 Short Preludes for piano
(All composed during the year 1963)
All of the over 500 compositions (fortunatelly dated by months and years) written between 1949 and 2004 by Richard Lane (1933-2004) are dedicated to the numerous faithful musician friends, students or colleagues he had during his life. He didn't care about money nor to be published. Each work carries the particular print which characterizes his love for friendships or his pedagogical dedication. His great natural musical talent, his modesty and careless feelings concerning the different trends of contemporary music resulted nevertheless into musical jewels within the mainstream American "classical" music of his time.
Some of the dedicators of these 12 Short Preludes (all written in 1963) have graciously accepted to write short comments…

From Arno Drucker, September 2009, Baltimore MD, USA (Preludes IV and X dedicated to him and his wife Ruth)
Richard "Dick" Lane evidently had a set of 12 Short Preludes in mind since he created the order that was not the order in which he composed them. Prelude IV is a strong, very positive and powerful piece that is a bit heroic - not that I am necessarily that, but he apparently thought of me or honored but pleased me in that way.
Most of the preludes for the women are gentle and tender, as I imagine he felt that way about them. The Prelude VIII he wrote for Mary K. Traver that is "Chopinesque", was probably because he remembered her as playing a good deal of Chopin. I also imagine the Prelude V, "for B" (probably his friend Boris), the only "pop", "blues" or "jazz" style, was probably because his other friends, although I don't know all of them, were "serious" or "classical" musicians. As I mentioned before, my wife Ruth was an inspiration for songs, and he must have thought of her as the singer she is, hence the lyrical Prelude X. The Preludes for men are all strong, powerful and brilliant, with Henry Ingram's Prelude VI being pseudo Bach - Henry was sort of like that. I knew Lucy Ingram (Prelude VII) and particulary remember Gladys Leventon (Prelude III), who taught piano and composition, as a wonderful, gentle teacher who was close to Richard Lane and he was very fond of her.

From Albert Stanziano, September 1st, 2009, Clifton, NJ, USA (Prelude XII)
At the time Richard Lane presented me with the music for the 12 Short Preludes, I was a teenage piano student of Isadore Freeman, for whom Prelude XI was dedicated, and studying composition with Richard Lane prior to his stint in the U.S. Army. I believe he wrote Prelude XII with me in mind because he was always impressed with my natural facility for the keyboard. Subsequentally I received the Prelude XII with the "Presto" tempo marking. I have frequently performed this prelude in recitals, usually as a dramatic encore. My relationship with Richard was one of mutual admiration and respect for both his talent and his craftsmanship.

From Mary Kathrin Traver (-Green), July 2009, Hyattswill, MA, USA (Prelude VIII)
Richard Lane and I were colleagues and students at the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester, NY, USA). I performed much of his music for solo piano during thoses years and over the many years following our student days. This connection continued after I joined the music faculty at the University of Maryland and after my marriage to Professor Emeritus Paul Traver (pianist and conductor), who was also member of that faculty. He dedicated also his Concerto for piano and symphony orchestra (DD87), written in 1961 - two years before the 12 Short Preludes - to my husband and to me.
I am personally very pleased to know that Editions Bim is publishing his music. This is a splendid tribute to a very talented musician, a wonderful human being and a dedicated teacher who was beloved by his many students and friends.

All the numerous piano music by Richard Lane is in preparation at Editions Bim.
