About Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

(1840-1893) Romantic Period – Russia

Tchaikovsky was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884 by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension. His music is famous for its strong emotion, and his technical skill and strict work habits helped guarantee its lasting appeal. When he was 21, Tchaikovsky decided to take music lessons at the Russian Musical Society. In 1863, he moved to Moscow, where he became a professor of harmony at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1874, he established himself with Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor. Some of his most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, the 1812 Overture, and Marche Slave. His ballets - the Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake - are equally well-known. Tchaikovsky composed music for ballet, orchestra, opera, piano, and voice.
